Literacy Council York-Simcoe Empowering Lives Through Learning

A Legacy of Lifelong Learning

For more than 40 years, the Literacy Council York-Simcoe (LCYS) Skills Upgrading Centre has been transforming lives by providing adults with the tools they need to achieve their personal, educational, and professional goals.

Through customized skills upgrading programs, LCYS helps participants gain essential literacy, digital literacy, and employability skills, paving the way for a brighter future.

Empowering Adults Through Education

LCYS is a not-for profit organization that supports over 250 individuals annually with the help of a small but dedicated team of staff and volunteers. They offer a range of services, including one-to-one tutoring, small class instruction, and computer-assisted learning. These programs are designed to meet the unique needs of each participant, whether they aim to advance their education, secure better employment, or enhance their personal development.

Transformative Learning Experiences

The impact of LCYS’s work is best illustrated through the story of Margaret. Facing challenges in securing and maintaining employment, Margaret turned to LCYS for help. She began with computer skills training, where she learned how to navigate various software programs, from creating banners to understanding email functions. With the support of the LCYS team, Margaret successfully completed her programs, set up an online interview, and secured a job offer. She is now on her way to pursuing a college education in the health field, having passed her English testing.

Celebrating Community Support

The success of the Literacy Council York-Simcoe is made possible by the unwavering support from volunteers, donors, and the community. Funds raised through the partnership with Bingo World and Gaming Newmarket

have been crucial in providing the resources needed to offer these lifechanging programs. LCYS extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributes to these efforts, emphasizing that ongoing community and charitable gaming support are essential to their mission.

Towards a Brighter Future

The Literacy Council York-Simcoe exemplifies the power of education in transforming lives. As they continue to support adult learners in their community, they look forward to new successes and opportunities to serve.

This program has been made possible in part thanks to funds from Charitable Gaming. Community Good.
